FAQs
General Eye Care
How often should I get an eye exam?
Adults with no vision problems should have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years. If you wear prescription eyewear, have a family history of eye disease, or have conditions like diabetes, annual exams are strongly recommended. Children should be examined before starting school and regularly throughout their school years.
Our licensed opticians work directly with your doctor’s prescription to bring your vision plan to life — we’re always happy to advise on when to schedule your next exam.
What is the difference between an optician, optometrist, and ophthalmologist?
Optometrist: Performs eye exams, diagnoses vision problems, and writes prescriptions.
Ophthalmologist: A medical doctor who specializes in eye surgery and the treatment of eye disease.
Optician (that’s us!): A licensed professional trained to fit, adjust, and dispense eyeglasses and contact lenses based on your prescription. Our team — including co-owners Larry Pion and Kerry Bilski, both Registered Dispensing Opticians (RDOs) — has over 50 years of combined experience fitting eyewear for even the most complex prescriptions.
Do I need a prescription to buy eyeglasses?
Yes — prescription eyeglasses require a current, valid prescription from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist. We do not perform eye exams, but we are happy to work with any valid prescription from your doctor. Non-prescription (plano) sunglasses and certain safety frames do not require a prescription.
If you don’t have a current prescription, give us a call and we can point you toward eye care providers in the Northampton and Chicopee area.
Lenses & Coatings
What lens coatings do you recommend?
We recommend the following coatings for most patients:
Anti-reflective (AR): Reduces glare from screens, headlights, and overhead lighting for clearer, more comfortable vision. We recommend this for virtually everyone.
Scratch-resistant: Extends the life of your lenses, especially important for children’s glasses and active lifestyles.
UV protection: Blocks harmful UVA and UVB rays even on clear lenses — essential for long-term eye health.
Photochromic (light-adaptive): Lenses that automatically darken outdoors and clear back indoors — a great all-in-one option.
Our opticians will recommend the best combination for your lifestyle and prescription during your visit.
What is an anti-reflective coating, and do I really need it?
Anti-reflective (AR) coating eliminates reflections on both sides of your lenses, allowing more light to pass through for sharper, clearer vision. The benefits include reduced digital eye strain from computer and phone screens, elimination of glare from oncoming headlights while driving at night, and nearly invisible lenses so people can see your eyes instead of a reflection.
We strongly recommend AR coating for most patients — especially those who work on computers, drive at night, or spend significant time under artificial lighting.
What are progressive lenses, and who needs them?
Progressive lenses are multifocal lenses with no visible lines that correct distance, intermediate, and near vision all in a single lens. They are the modern alternative to bifocals for anyone who needs correction at more than one distance — most commonly adults over 40 who experience presbyopia (age-related difficulty reading up close).
Our licensed opticians are experienced fitting even the most complex prescriptions and will help you find the right progressive lens design and frame for a comfortable, seamless transition.
How long do prescription eyeglasses last?
Most eyeglass frames last one to three years with proper care, though high-quality frames can last considerably longer. Lenses typically remain optimal for one to two years before coatings begin to wear or your prescription changes.
We recommend updating your lenses whenever your prescription changes by a noticeable amount — wearing an incorrect prescription can cause headaches, eye strain, and visual fatigue. Every frame we carry comes with a manufacturer’s warranty at no added cost.
Eyeglass Care & Maintenance
How do I properly clean my eyeglasses?
Follow these steps for safe, effective cleaning:
1. Rinse under lukewarm water to remove dust and debris before wiping (dry-wiping scratches lenses).
2. Apply a tiny drop of dish soap to each lens and gently rub both sides of the lens and the frame.
3. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
4. Dry with a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth — never paper towels, tissues, or clothing.
Avoid: household glass cleaners (contain ammonia), acetone-based products, hot water, and abrasive materials — all of which damage lens coatings. Always store glasses in a hard case when not in use to prevent scratches and accidental damage.
My glasses keep sliding down — can you adjust them?
Absolutely — frame adjustments are part of what we do. Glasses that sit too low, pinch the nose, press behind the ears, or sit crooked can be adjusted by our licensed opticians. Proper fit is essential for both comfort and correct vision through the optical center of the lens.
Stop by either of our locations, and we’ll be happy to adjust your frames. In many cases, adjustments take just a few minutes.
Can scratched lenses be repaired?
Unfortunately, lens scratches cannot be repaired — once a lens coating is scratched, the damage is permanent. Products marketed as scratch removers typically only make scratches less visible temporarily and can further damage coatings. The best solution for deeply scratched lenses is replacement.
This is why we recommend scratch-resistant coating on all lenses from the start, and always storing your glasses in a protective hard case when not in use.
Sunglasses & Sport Eyewear
Do you carry prescription sunglasses?
Yes — we offer a wide selection of prescription sunglasses, including fashion frames, sport designs, and specialty brands like Wiley X and Silhouette (we are an authorized dealer for both). All sunglass lenses provide full UVA and UVB protection, and polarized options are available for superior glare reduction.
Prescription sunglasses are available in a wide range of lens styles, including single vision, bifocal, and progressive. Think of them like sunscreen for your eyes — an investment in long-term eye health, not just summer comfort.
What are polarized lenses, and when should I choose them?
Polarized lenses contain a special filter that blocks reflected horizontal light — the intense, blinding glare that bounces off flat surfaces like water, pavement, car hoods, and snow. They dramatically improve visual comfort and contrast in bright conditions.
We recommend polarized lenses for fishing, boating, skiing, cycling, driving, and any outdoor activity where glare is a significant factor. Note that polarized lenses can make certain digital screens (like ATMs or some car dashboards) harder to read at specific angles — your optician can advise if this is a concern for your specific needs.
OSHA Safety Eyewear
What is OSHA-approved safety eyewear?
OSHA-approved safety eyewear meets the ANSI Z87.1 or Z87.2+ impact resistance standard, offering significantly greater protection than regular eyeglasses. Frames and lenses are tested to withstand high-velocity impact, making them required in many workplace environments.
Thoren Optical is an authorized Hoya Safe Vision distributor and carries the largest selection of Z87.2+ safety frames in the Pioneer Valley. We service businesses in manufacturing, healthcare, construction, and many other industries — and we can set up a company eyewear program to suit your team’s needs.
Can I get prescription lenses in safety frames?
Yes — and this is one of our core specialties. We fit prescription lenses (including bifocals and progressives) into OSHA-approved safety frames so you get full vision correction and certified workplace protection in one pair. Our licensed opticians can accommodate a wide range of prescriptions.
We work with employers throughout the Pioneer Valley to keep their teams safe and see clearly. Contact us to discuss setting up a safety eyewear program for your business.
Insurance & Visiting Us
Do you accept vision insurance?
Yes, Thoren Optical works with vision insurance plans. We encourage you to contact us directly before your visit so we can verify your specific coverage and help you understand and maximize your benefits.
We currently take most Eyemed plans. This includes Health New England Medicare Advantage, Fallon, and Tufts. Eyemed is offered to employees of Baystate Medical Center, Big Y Foods, Smith & Wesson, and many other employers in the area.
Why choose Thoren Optical over a chain store?
At Thoren Optical, your glasses are fitted by licensed Registered Dispensing Opticians (RDOs) — not chain-store stylists with minimal training. Owners Larry Pion and Kerry Bilski bring over 50 years of combined experience, formerly of Kens’ Eyewear Northampton, so you receive expert, personalized care that large retail chains simply cannot match.
We offer top-quality lenses and coatings, manufacturer warranties at no added cost, and the ability to handle even the most complex prescriptions. Every patient is treated as an individual — we take the time to get your fit right. And when you shop with us, you support a locally owned Pioneer Valley business.
